Before Book One
Review for the First Week of Class
I. Introduce English phrases for the classroom.
Write some of the following phrases on the board. Tell the students what these phrases mean. These
phrases will be useful inside the classroom. Add additional phrases that you think may be useful.
“What does ___ mean? “ and “___means ___.”
“I don’t understand ___.”
“When do we use___?”
“Please explain ___ again.”
“Please help me.”
“Great Job!,” “Very Good!,” or “Excellent Job!”
“Who can guess what ___ means?”
“Try again!”
“Please open your books to page ___.”
“Who knows the answer?”
“Can I have a volunteer read_____?”
II. Give the students abbreviations you will use in class.
Write these abbreviations for grammar terms and their meanings on the board. Tell the students to copy
these abbreviations into their notebook. Explain that these are abbreviations you will use when you write
on the board in your class.
S—Subject
N—Noun
V—Verb
Adj—Adjective
Adv—Adverb
DO—Direct Object
IO—Indirect Object
V1—Simple Present (e.g. I go, she goes)
V2—Simple Past (e.g. I went, she went)
V3—Past Participle (e.g. I have gone, she has gone, etc.)
Inf—Infinitive (e.g. to play, to walk)
Inf to—Infinitive without ‘to’ (e.g. play, walk)
III. Review good study skills.
In English For Cambodia Book 1, students are introduced to a lot of material very quickly. Remind students
that if they do not study on their own time, at home, it will be difficult for them to learn English. EFC Book 1
is the first book students study in school. If they want to be successful later in books 2-6 they need to
understand clearly the material in Book 1. Good study habits early can bring rewards later. Book One

Warm-Up:
Go around the room and ask the students to introduce themselves. Put this box on the board.
Vocabulary:

hello (interj.): an expression of greeting

Introduce positive statements with “to be.” See page 269.
Lesson Revisions:
Before Activity B, review possessives. Make two columns on the board: girl, boy. Give students the words
(she, her, his, he) and have a student come and write the word under the correct column.

Activity B, C, D:
Write on the board. Demonstrate for students the following conversation between two people. Have them
practice in pairs.
Student A) Hello, I am (your name). What is your name?
Student B) Hello (student A’s name), my name is (your name).
Student A) (student B’s name), what is his/her name? (point at a student in class)
Student B) (His/Her) name is (their name).
Have students go around the classroom and ask each other these questions. After students talk with one
another, they write their names in the other students' notebooks. Students are finished when they have
talked with everyone in the classroom.
Activity E:
Sing the alphabet song. Have students practice writing the A,B,Cs.
Help students sound out the spelling of their names.

Warm-Up:
Option 1- Write the alphabet on the board but leave some of the letters out. Have students fill in the gaps
and practice reciting the ABCS.
Option 2- Write the alphabet on the board and have students come to the board and write a word that
starts with that letter.
Example:
